THE POWER OF HASHTAGS ON SOCIAL MEDIA
#FEESMUSTFALL

| students marching |
Just a brief summary, the fees must fall campaign is one of the students
protest that started at the University of the Witwatersrand after students have
heard that fees for the next academic year will increase by 10.5%. But why
because some of us cannot even afford to pay for our studies? Anyway that is a
story for another day. So basically the protest started as #Witsfeesmustfall,
then after a while other universities joined the protest and it led to
#feesmustfall Background summary.
Without the social media, this could not have gone this far to a point whereby all universities shut down for the same reasons.

ADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON #FEESMUSTFALL
- As a thought leader on the strategic use of social media, #FEESMUSTFALL social media campaign went viral within a waste of time.
- The hashtag got to reach a vast audience which includes all students across the world and the government. Students from other varsities became aware of what is happening in this side of town through #FEESMUSTFALL.
- Other hashtags were established after #FEESMUSTFALL. Some of the hashtags were #RAINMUSTFALL, #RHODESMUSTFALL, #ZUMAMUSTFALL, UCTSHUTDOWN, #PARLIAMENTMUSTFALL in fact everything in south had to fall. How ironic is that?
DISADVANTAGES OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON #FEESMUSTFALL
- Once the hashtag goes viral it becomes difficult to control the matter. Hashtags usually result with a negative impact, in way that a campaign has influenced a lot of people. #feesmustfall caused violence between students and the police officers because students tried to keep the momentum of the campaign in wrong ways and it became difficult for the state to control this matter.
- Usually it result as a negative impact as they (audience) always have something bad to say about the brand.
- Once your phrase has a hashtag on it, it is no longer private because your profile will most likely to appear when people search for stories about that hashtag.
- People end up including other hashtags after the main content, this is to promote or sell themselves as brands. And most of the time whatever they include is irrelevant to the content. “#feesmustfall, #callmewhatever, #weedingvibes”, etc. (^_^)

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR STRATEGIC USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA.
In conclusion, I would recommend that the campaign should be ran on all social networks like Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, Twitter and Facebook as to be able to target all students.
The public relations practitioners for big companies must act first by making students aware of how they can assist through #feesmustfall, probably by expanding the number of applications made available for bursaries. This will maintain the good image of the company as students will be spreading the word to other students on campus.Tips for using social media as a marketing strategy

Great post I like how you mentioned the bad part of it, that is students attacking the police and also the advice on how companies should have responded by expanding their bursaries to an increased number of students. Will most definitely do well for their brand. Big up! :)

ReplyDeleteWhat do you suggest the government and institutions do in order to prevent such activities to take place in future.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very good question my guy. Anyway we all know that the fees will increase overtime. Therefore the government together with institutions must communicate with the student leaders by having meetings to discuss the interest rates. This will prevent such activities to take place in future as there will be agreements made between what students can afford and how other companies can donate. I believe your question is answered.
DeleteI personally think that the youth of South Africa, particularly the students were on point when they demanded free education from the government, education is the most important aspect that can liberate the poor masses of South Africa from economic suppression and racial segregation.
ReplyDeleteDo you think that free education is possible in South Africa?
Nice one I am impressed 😊. According to my own perception, free education is possible only in basic education (Grade 1-12). But with the higher education and training that is something else, South Africa is still facing some "financial issues", not to mention the inflation. Another thing, South Africa is a developing country. I do not see free education in our country anytime soon, and we all not going to make it in life through school. However, if education was to be free in SA, the admission to university entrance has to be high. Like 70% average for each prospective student, to avoid people from being comfortable around school knowing that everything is being paid for. I say free education will increase the rate of students who drop out each year, because some of them will go to varsity just experience that life, once it gets tough they drop out.
DeleteEducation is not a privilege. It is unfair that tertiary institutions have a percentage increase on student fees every year. I feel like the students should have went as far as protesting for a percentage decrease instead of settling for zero percent increase
ReplyDeleteThere is no way that the institutions can decrease interest rates, especially when there's inflation. University should maintain itself by doing renovations and upgrades were necessary. Staff members should get paid and study resources should be enough for everyone one. So if institutions decrease the interest rates this will have an impact on our economy, and the government will have to pay for such things like renovations and staff salaries. And once the government does that it will lead to inflation.
DeleteThere is so much i learned from this blog. Thanks for the information.
ReplyDeleteI'm giving you free education my brother😊
